Loving Ubuntu !

July 28th, 2010 undan No comments

Installed latest Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. For those who don’t know, Ubuntu is a Linux Operating System just like Windows or more than that.

Check out the features of this new version here : http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/features

In my experience, installation took approximately 20 minutes, asking only 7 very basic questions to me. It includes a few great enhancements to enrich your computer experience.

  • Wireless configuration was a breeze. It found my home wireless automatically and prompted for password. That’s all. I am online withing a few seconds. :) :)

  • Software Center application provides access to 32000+ free/open source applications that are ready to be downloaded and installed with a single click. Yes, a single click is all you need. :)

  • It contains an update manager that could update all my software including the Operating System with one click. I do not have to keep on downloading security updates, firefox, openoffice or chrome seperately. this cute little application lists all updates in one place where I can click “Update” and it does the rest.

You do not need to partition or install the software to see how it looks. You can experience the Ubuntu magic just by booting from the CD. Try it, and if you like it, join the revolution. :)

My Linux PC at Home

January 20th, 2009 undan No comments

At home, I am using a PC with Debian Etch installed on it.

PC configuration :
Celeron 1.8 Ghz Processor
1 GB RAM
160 GB Harddisk
DVD Writer
and a 17” TFT Monitor

While this isn’t a gamer’s PC or even a high-end one, it is enough for my (and my wife’s ) needs.

We have all our songs/photos/movie collection on this PC apart from my work related stuff.

Our usual development activities consists of HTML, PHP and Javascript. This PC runs the following services to support us.

Apache – Web Server
MySQLDB Server
Exim – Mail Server
OpenSSH – Remote Access & File Transfer

We also use a couple of softwares regularly. Most of these softwares have Windows versions also Available. So you don’t need to be disappointed if you are using a Microsoft Windows Operating system..Go check them out !!

Geany – Editor for PHP/HTML/Javascript
RapidSVN – Subversion client.
Gimp – Photo/Image Editor.
OpenOffice – For documents/spreadsheets/presentations
GnuCash – Tracking finance.
F-Spot – Photo collection organizer
Rhythmbox – Music Player/Organizer
Mplayer – Video Player

We do play games too. Mostly board games and puzzles. I like playing “frozen bubble” and my wife is addicted to “bomberclone” ! :)

I do not need to worry about spending a fortune to buy all commercial software to get my things done. All these software comes absolutely FREE ! We only paid for the PC Hardware. :)

Review : Chandramukhi & XXX2

June 14th, 2005 undan 1 comment

ChandraMukhi :
This movie was supposed to be a remake of an evertime hit Malayalam movie “Manichitrathazhu”. I should say from a rajani fan view, this is a good movie. The crew did some tweaks in the original sotry to make it suitable for the “Rajni effect”, but still it’s an enjoyable movie with some nice comedy scenes from Rajnikanth and Vadivelu. But if you tell me to compare the movie with the original… there it goes, the tamil version is not at all good when we compare the performance of the actors as well as the script. Biju called me last week and said that after he saw Jyothika as “Nagavalli ( Chandramukhi )” , he now respects Shobhana much more than he used to. I told him that this is not Jyothika’s fault at all.. After all she had put her 100% of efforts to push her eyeballs out everytime she becomes “Chandramukhi” :-) .

XXX2 - The Next Level :
This movie should be named as “The Level Below..” or something like that… Despite having a good fanfare for the first movie of this sequel, the director failed to impress the audience. Actor IceCage – introuduced as the next XXX, the secret agent looks like a pathetic clone of old James Bond. If you like to see some rough explosions, a plot that makes no sense and some eyecatching computer animation, go watch this movie. Don’t forget to unplug your brain before entering the theatre. :-D . And what the hell is an actor like “Samuel Jackson” doing in this crap ??!!
