Linux Directory Server

Linux can now boast about a fully flexible & manageable Directory Server. This Directory Server comes from RedHat as open source. They are bundling it with their Open source linux distribution , Fedora. This Directory Server is based on Netscape Directory Services which was acquired by RedHat sometime ago. The Directory Server supports industry standard options and is a boon for developers and enterprises looking forward to have a linux based easy_to_manage LDAP Directory Solution.

Google is Great !

I came across an announcement about Google’s “Click to Call” Service. Google plans to make you talk to any advertiser by just clicking on a phone icon near to the ad. It is in beta and is not launched yet.

Here is how it is expected to work:

1. You click on the phone icon on any of the advertisement of your interest which comes embedded in the search results page of google.
2. Put your phone number and google calls you ! Once you pick up the call, google connects you to the advertiser !

Cool, isn’t it? check out the below link for details.

Open Office 2.0 is here !

Glad to announce that Open Office 2.0 is released. OpenOffice is, in my opinion the most important project after the linux kernel in open source domain. This Application suite was a revolution in opensource and they clearly showed the world how to develop applications for the opensource and it really accelerated the success of Linux OS into the Desktop segment. This new Major release includes many new features and applications like a databse application called “Base” along with all the other standard office suite applications. I am downloading it to try out both in linux as well as windows.
It has almost all the features that are present in Micro$oft Office and more. Why to pay a fortune if you have a free alternative? . Try it and beleive it.

 Use OpenOffice.org

Beware of IE!

I got this from my friend Rojin.

Just try this:
1. Copy some text from any file in your computer. ( Press Ctrl+C or Right click the mouse and select “Copy” )
2. Open the below url:
http://www.friendlycanadian.com/applications/clipboard.htm

3. The copied text appears on the webpage! The scripts that are embedded to the webpage are able to capture the clipboard contents of your OS!

Do not keep sensitive data (like passwords, creditcard numbers, PIN etc.) in the clipboard while surfing the web. It is extremely easy to
extract the text stored in the clipboard to steal your sensitive information.

Good News!
This is applicable only to Internet Explorer. I use and recommend everyone to use FireFox Browser. Firefox is much secure and is not vulnerable to these type of attacks. Good luck!

🙂

A Great Software!

I am using Firefox Browser from it’s early development stages. I don’t like to teach you the history of how it evolved, but I would like to express a few words regarding the ease of use and features which forced me to promote it through my blog.

First of all, Firefox is standards-compliant and it’s available as free download. It’s a very small download as compared to Internet Explorer or Opera. It’s available for Windows, Linux and Other Unix varients. The features include tabbed browsing ( Which I found really helpful !), popup blocking, rss support, ad-blocking etc etc. After I started using Firefox for my internet browsing, I am not at all worried about the activex ,spyware stuff..

Techies approve it to be the most secure and stable browser compared to Opera , Netscape and Internet Explorer.

If you want looks, it supports themes and plugins which makes you to change the look and feel as well as extend it’s functionality.

Nothing more to say.. Give it a try…

Get Firefox!
